Oulton Park
I have strong personal preferences when it comes to race tracks. Airfields were designed for aircraft. That is why the likes of Silverstone, Thruxton and Snetterton, for all their individual nuances and challenges, will never find a place in my affections like a circuit suffixed by Park. My top three circuits in the UK are (in no particular order) the three Parks; Cadwell, Donington and Oulton.
Many a southern racer moans when they see Oulton Park on their calendar. "Its in the North" they cry. Actually, it isn't. It is about an hour north of Birmingham and about four hours south of Knockhill. Which is in the north. (And will be featured as a Drivers Know Circuit when I get up there to have a go).
Oulton is one of the most majestic circuits in Europe. Apart from a couple of chicanes, its layout has not been butchered by the needs of having to cater for F1 cars. At nearly 3 miles, it is certainly good value too…
